Maintaining a healthy Nespresso machine is the key to ensuring it lives a long and tasteful life. If you, like many others, are in need of a brew during those tiresome moments, your Nespresso machine is likely your saving grace. But even your machine needs some love in return.

Have you ever noticed that your coffee tastes slightly off? Then your Nespresso may need descaling. Descaling is an important aspect of maintenance that only takes around 20 minutes out of your day and we can show you how to do it.

What is Descaling?

Every time you use your Nespresso, the hot water flowing through the machine leaves small deposits of a mineral called calcium carbonate that build up over time. This build-up can be particularly prevalent in places that use hard water due to a higher concentration of minerals in that water. When you descale a Nespresso machine, you will be removing these deposits resulting in a healthier machine and better tasting coffee.

How Often Should I Descale My Machine?

It is recommended that one should descale their Nespresso machine every three months or after 300 uses, but we don’t expect anyone to keep track of how many pods they use. As a minimum, descaling twice a year will still help maintain your machine.

What Will I Need?

To successfully descale a Nespresso machine, you will need a descaling solution kit. The Urnex Dezcal Activated Scale Remover kit is cheap, non-toxic, biodegradable, safe and works on most machines. For only $3 this will get the job done. As well as the solution, you will need fresh water to fill your water tank and a container to catch the water.

How to Descale My Nespresso

The steps required to descale a Nespresso machine are quite simple. Although these steps will vary slightly depending on the model. This process contains general instructions and applies to all machines in the range.

Preparing my Nespresso machine

  • First of all, you need to prepare your machine. Start by removing the used capsule container, the drip tray and any other capsules inside the machine.

  • Place a cup or container under the dispenser to catch the liquid that flows through. It is advised that the cup or container be able to hold at least 1 litre of liquid.

  • Once ready, pour the required amount of descaling solution and water into the water tank.

  • Turn on the machine and allow it to heat up.

Starting the descaling process

  • This step all depends on the machine that is being descaled.

  • To start the process, you need to activate descaling mode on your machine, usually by pressing a series of buttons consecutively or select the option on the display.

  • Once the descaling process has begun, the water tank will drain, flow through the machine, and then dispense into the cup or container you have placed underneath.

  • Once the solution has drained or when told to do so, repeat the process with the used solution.

Rinsing my Nespresso machine

  • Once completed, empty the water tank and rinse it out making sure it is devoid of any solution.

  • Refill the water tank with fresh water and restart the process for a third and final time, emptying the tank completely.

  • Dispose of the water.

Exiting descaling mode

  • Again, depending on the machine being used, press the required buttons on your Nespresso machine in order to exit descaling mode. Some machines will turn off automatically indicating that it has exited descaling model.

Now, your Nespresso machine has been descaled and is ready to make amazing coffees again.
