YCFCU Yirgacheffe Organic Fair Trade

New Arrival from Ethiopia

May 5, 2014

The Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) was established in June 2002 and represents 43,794 farmers who are members of 26 coops in the Gedeo region of Southern Ethiopia. The coops produce Organic and Fair Trade certified coffee and are spread over 6 districts: Yirgacheffe, Gedeb, Wonango, Dilla Zuria, Bule, and Kochere. The coffee-producing land area exceeds 62,000 hectares and YCFCU produces both washed and sundried (natural) Yirgacheffe coffee. Using the social premiums from their Fair Trade certified coffees, the YCFCU coops have been able to accomplish many projects including building schools, installing electricity to benefit the residents of these remote coffee farming areas, and the construction and improvement of roads and bridges.

YCFCU is working very hard to be proactive in terms of promoting quality. Premiums (over ECX ) to farmers based on coffee grade is a measure that they are implementing to increase the quality of coffee. YCFCU now has its own processing facility in Addis, but still no lab, sometimes using the SCFCU lab. In 2014-15 they planned to export approximately 220 containers of high quality coffee to markets around the world.

COOPAFSI believes its female members contribute to the physical and sensory quality of the coffee. They are always managing new projects and developing new ways to improve the lives of their families. They focus their efforts on improving quality and delivering consistent coffee to different markets. Banko Gotiti Organic Fair Trade

New Arrival from Ethiopia

April 20, 2018

Banko Gotiti is the name of both the village and the washing station where this coffee was produced. Located close to the border of the Oromia Region, the closest main town is Gedeb, south of Yirgacheffe, in the Gedeo Zone of the Southern Nations Region.

The washing station is owned and operated by METAD Agricultural Development PLC. The family-run company was gifted property by Emperor Selassie in honor of the matriarch, Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot. METAD is now managed by her grandson Aman Adinew, and its export partner Rift Valley Trading LLC is operated by his brother Michael Adinew. Among the many important pieces of work undertaken by METAD are their commitment to equal employment opportunities for women and education opportunities for the youth of the coffee lands, their early partnerships with Grounds for Health, and their development of Africa’s first SCAA certified lab.

Once sold under the Yirgacheffe name, we’ve started to be a little more regionally specific with coffees from this area of the world. While the name Yirgacheffe is easily recognized by coffee buyers – and happens to be associated with some of the first fully washed processing in the world – the town of Gedeb is more specific: it is both the town and the region surrounding the city; like a city plus the suburbs – so you could think of Banko Gotiti, the kebele, as an outlying neighborhood of the Gedeb woreda, all encompassed by the Gedeo Zone.

We often find Gedeb coffees similar in style to Yirgacheffes, but a little bigger, a little bolder, a little less subtle. This exceptional lot fits that mold, offering abundant stone, citrus, and berry fruits layered with plenty of inherent sweetness and that slightly floral, slightly savory je ne sais quoi that makes washed Ethiopian coffees some of the most unique and thrilling in the world.

Features

  • CERTIFICATIONS | Fair Trade Certified 100% USDA Organic

  • LOCATION | Banko Gotiti, Gedeb, Gedeo Zone, Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region, Ethiopia

  • VARIETY | Indigenous Heirloom

  • ALTITUDE | 1600 - 2300 masl

  • PROCESS | Depulped and fermented for 36-48 hours, double washed

  • DRYING | Sun-Dried

  • HARVEST | October - December

Nossa Senhora De Fatima Brazil Organic Fair Trade

New Arrival from Brazil

January 16, 2018

Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima is situated within the Triangulo Mineiro, in the famed Cerrado region. Coffees from this area are often touted as some of the best that Brazil has to offer. The dark red soil typical of the area produces an excellent cup.

This farm produces only 100% organic coffee. Its 895,000 coffee trees are closely monitored by a full-time agricultural engineer to ensure consistency and quality. Ricardo Aguiar Resende, a third-generation coffee farmer, directs the farm’s production, commercialization and social projects along with his wife, Gisele.

Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima (FNSF) has gone above and beyond in its commitment to social and environmental equity. The 75-110 workers at this farm travel every day from three towns: Perdizes, Patrocinio and Igrejinha da Macega. Ricardo arranges the transportation for the workers every day, though some actually live on the property. The production of natural fertilizer from livestock and a new biodigestor combine to produce all the energy needed for the farm. FNSF strives to produce all of the energy and most of the inputs needed for coffee production. The reforestation of native trees is underway, adding to the farm’s portion of shade-grown coffee, which is not commonly found in Brazil.

In January of 2012, the farm became the world’s first Fair Trade Certified™ coffee estate. Within 3 months of certification, the farm’s 110 workers (40% of whom are women) earned $7,250 in community development premiums, which they elected to invest in critical healthcare programs. Through FNSF’s participation in Fair Trade USA’s Fair Trade for All initiative, 30 workers have already received eye exams, 27 received glasses, and 11 received dental care.
