Artizan Coffee Company, a Miami-based Specialty Coffee Roaster, has received full USDA Organic Certification status for its line of Nespresso Compatible Coffee Capsules.

Today's announcement means that Artizan Coffee is the FIRST and ONLY producer of coffee capsules compatible with Nespresso machines to carry the USDA Organic Seal.

"In going organic, we're putting the coffee drinker's health before profits," said Julio Abril, co-founder of Artizan Coffee.

To be certified as organic, a grower or product handler must meet a set of stringent requirements under the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP).

Receiving the USDA Organic Certification Seal demonstrates Artizan Coffee's ongoing commitment to a healthy planet and assures consumers that the company, products and individual ingredients meet NOP standards, which require that organic crops must be grown on land that has a sustainable crop rotation plan to prevent erosion and the loss of nutrients in the soil, has been free from prohibited pesticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers for three years preceding growth and is processed and packed without the involvement of any chemicals.

"Conventional coffee is among the most heavily chemically treated foods in the world," said Mr. Abril. "It's a commodity crop that is typically saturated with synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides - all of which can be extremely hazardous to farmers, the environment that they rely on to sustain themselves, the surrounding communities and the end consumer."

What is USDA Certification?

To be certified as USDA organic, all of our coffee beans are required to be grown without the use of harmful chemicals and must use more sustainable farming methods. Instead of chemical fertilizers, farmers use natural manure fertilizers and other organic soil enhancers. Chemical pesticides, insecticides, and other mixtures are prohibited, except for those that have been studied and proven safe for use with food crops. This is a very narrow list that excludes many harmful chemicals.

Our continued reliance on the best organic practices allows us to proudly show our commitment to organic coffee through use of the USDA organic logo. Unlike EU certified organic products which do not distinguish between organic and 100% organic, our products are certified by the USDA as 100% organic.

What is Fairtraide USA Certification?

Fair Trade USA is a non-profit organization that looks at the supply chains and business practices used to obtain coffee, tea, chocolate, and other products. Those companies that source ethically by allowing farm workers to organize, paying fair minimum rates for produce, ensuring minimum standards of labor, and encouraging sustainable environmental practices can obtain Fair Trade certification.
